Mark Webber ended the pole position monopoly of Sebastian Vettel on Saturday when he beat his Red Bull team-mate for first place on the grid for the Spanish Formula One Grand Prix.
The Australian veteran Webber clocked 1 minute 20.981 seconds on the 4.655-kilometres Catalunya circuit where he won 12 months ago from pole.
World champion Vettel, who had claimed all previous four poles of the season and went on to get three race wins, had to be content with second place in 1:21.181.
The rest of the pack lagged far behind with Lewis Hamilton third for McLaren and local hero Fernando Alonso fourth in a Ferrari.
Vettel tops the championship with 93 points from Hamilton (59), Webber (55), Jenson Button (46) and Alonso (41).
Nick Heidfeld will start Sunday’s race from last place as his Renault could not be repaired in time for qualifying after catching fire in morning practice because of an exhaust failure.
